Purpose of kamailio

Whats the purpose of using kamailio on top of asterisk and how is it helping asterisk to handle more calls in terms of processing the audio?

Aside from being a SBC (session border controller) protecting Asterisk from the outside world, it's primary function is to provide webRTC. No need for softphones. Everything can be run via your web browser. ;)
